Matariki 2024 at Waitete Pa, Waiau Beach

Dawn was an hour away. Torches and headlamps lit up friendly faces. A quiet group of early risers walked across the damp grass together, united in purpose. We were there to join with representatives of Ngati Te Ata Waiohua and Ngati Tamaoho, to honour the significance of Matariki with a special karakia.

Although clouds covered most of the stars, the spirit of harmony and appreciation for the beauty of our world and remembrance of loved ones shone bright. And, the rain held off. For that we were also grateful.

There is something mystical and spiritual about gathering together in this way. Huge thanks and appreciation to Edith Tuhimata, Paora Puru and Selwyn Herewini for blessing us with your gifts and knowledge.

Thanks to Hayley Parsons for opening Huntly House afterwards, and to members of the Residents Association who provided the kai. Also, much appreciation to Bakers Delight Pukekohe for the buns to go with the delicious soup.

A special thanks to Alan Cole and Franklin Local Board for supporting the Residents Association by covering the koha. We really appreciate the Board’s generosity.

Steve Fearon, our wonderful photographer—big thanks to you as well.

The Residents Association will do this again next year.
